What SAP BTP Consultants Actually Do All Week

Skip the platform brochure. Here is the work: destinations, CAP or Integration Suite, security, and keeping extensions upgrade-safe.

#BTP#CAP#Integration Suite#Extensions

“BTP consultant” is a vague title. In hiring conversations it usually means one of three jobs: extension developer, integration consultant, or platform administrator. Mixing them on a CV without evidence is why profiles get skipped.

Extension work

You build side-by-side apps with CAP (Node.js or Java), bind destinations to S/4HANA, handle principal propagation, and keep custom UI off the core. The weekly work is not “enabling BTP.” It is tickets: a supplier portal that needs an API, a workflow that needs an event, a destination that broke after a certificate rotation.

Integration work

Integration Suite (Cloud Integration, API Management, Event Mesh) is its own craft. You design iFlows, error handling, retry, monitoring, and mapping. You spend more time on payloads and idempotency than on cockpit screenshots.

Platform work

Subaccounts, entitlements, Cloud Foundry vs Kyma, IAS/IPS, and role collections. This is closer to cloud operations. It is essential, and it is not the same as writing CAP services.

How to specialise

Pick a primary: CAP extensions or Integration Suite or platform ops. Then add enough S/4HANA process knowledge to talk to functional owners.

  • CAP people should be able to explain destination, XSUAA, and why they did not modify the core.
  • Integration people should be able to explain an order event from S/4HANA to a third-party system, including failure paths.
  • Platform people should be able to explain account structure and how developers get a safe landscape.
If your experience is only a BTP discovery workshop, say so. Interviewers can tell. A single production iFlow or CAP service with monitoring is a stronger signal.

BTP demand is real because clean-core programmes need somewhere for custom work to live. The consultants who get hired can point to that somewhere in a landscape diagram.
