Every SAP job description now mentions AI. Few of them mean “train a model.” Most mean: can you use the assistants SAP is shipping, and can you do it without leaking data or inventing process?
What Joule is for
Joule is a copilot that sits in SAP products and uses business context. The useful cases today are navigation, summarising a business object, and drafting follow-ups where the system already has the data. It is not a replacement for month-end control or custom pricing logic.
Where consultants should invest
- Know which process the user is in before you promise an AI feature. Finance, SuccessFactors, and development tooling are not the same copilot.
- Understand grounding: answers that are not tied to the tenant’s data are a demo, not a solution.
- Learn the extension points your landscape actually has — Joule skills, AI Business Services, or simply better Fiori apps — instead of a generic ChatGPT wrapper.
What not to put on a profile
“Prompt engineer for SAP” with no product, no landscape, and no outcome. Hiring managers want: reduced handling time on a helpdesk, faster CDS authoring in ADT, or a documented policy for what data the copilot may see.
If you are early in your career, get the process skill first. AI features are multiplying on top of S/4HANA, BTP, and ABAP Cloud. Consultants who already understand those layers will be the ones asked to switch the new features on.
