S/4HANA Skills That Actually Matter on Projects
What implementation teams still struggle with — and the skills that make consultants useful after the kick-off slide deck.

S/4HANA project interviews often start with “Have you done a brownfield or greenfield?” That question is a filter. The work that follows is more specific.
Fit-to-standard is a skill, not a slogan
On most programmes, the hard part is not activating a scope item. It is deciding what stays standard, what is a genuine gap, and what is a leftover ECC habit.
Consultants who add value can:
- Walk a process from document to posting and name the standard object involved.
- Challenge a custom report when a Fiori app or CDS query already covers it.
- Write a gap that a developer can implement without inventing a new data model.
Clean core in practice
Clean core is not “no custom code.” It is “custom code in the right place.” On-stack RAP for logic that must sit next to transactional data. Side-by-side BTP extensions when you are building portals, workflows, or integrations that should not block quarterly upgrades.
If you cannot explain released APIs versus unreleased tables, you will slow the technical team down.
Skills worth practising
- Universal Journal and why classic FI/CO reconciliation conversations change.
- Business Partner as the customer/vendor model, not an optional add-on.
- Fiori launchpad, catalogues, and the difference between a tile and an OData service.
- Cutover, data migration objects, and how you prove completeness.
If you are building a profile, pick one industry process (order to cash, procure to pay, or record to report) and be able to tell a project story in that language.
