If you are entering SAP, the first decision is not “which certification.” It is which kind of work you want to do for the next three to five years.

Functional, technical, or platform?

FICO is a functional path. You sit with finance teams, map processes, configure ledgers, closing, and controlling, and explain why a posting failed. It suits people from accounting, audit, or FP&A who like process and business rules.

ABAP is a technical path. You build and extend business applications, debug dumps, write CDS views, and increasingly work in ABAP Cloud / RAP rather than classic reports. It suits developers who already think in data models and APIs.

BTP is a platform and integration path. You design extensions, CAP services, Integration Suite flows, destinations, and identity. It suits people who like cloud architecture and glue-work between SAP and the rest of the stack.

What hiring managers look for

  • Evidence you have seen a real process end to end, not only a course module.
  • One primary skill and a supporting skill (for example FICO + S/4HANA, or ABAP + RAP, or BTP + Integration Suite).
  • The ability to talk about upgrades, clean-core constraints, and testing — not just configuration screenshots.

A simple decision rule

If you enjoy stakeholder workshops and process design, start with a functional module such as FICO, MM, or SD. If you enjoy building software, start with ABAP Cloud. If you enjoy integration and cloud services, start with BTP.

Do not collect five unrelated certifications in year one. Depth in one path plus S/4HANA context beats a shallow badge collection.

Once you have 12–18 months of project evidence, you can add a second skill. That is when profiles become competitive: FICO consultants who understand Universal Journal, ABAP developers who can ship RAP services, BTP consultants who can explain event-driven integration without jargon.
